A Self Portrait

‘A Self Portrait’ depicts the challenges in front of Muslim women who are faced with the daunting task of having to break out of the stereotypical world view that is projected upon them by outsiders. The purdah has cast these women in a traditional and rigid framework, where the cloth is seen as a barrier to gaining literacy and self identity. However, today Muslim women are coming out in large numbers to support their sisters by either building mosques which results in freedom from cleric-controlled jammats, propagating education and health care, thereby creating new social space within the Muslim community. The scope to undertake work for societal benefit rests on these women who are faced with the dual challenge of breaking gender as well as religious stereotypes.
