The foundation of any democratic state is based on the freedom and independence of press from bureaucratic control and private interests of individuals or corporations. The reason behind the formation and institutionalization of media has been to serve as a watch dog for democracy and the rights of the citizens of a country. Newspapers played an important role in the freedom struggle of India, helping freedom fighters to disseminate nationalist ideals. Later radio and television have been providing their audiences with the necessary information about community development as well as acting as sources of mass information. The phenomenal growth of the Indian media industry in the last decade continues to generate debates and talking points about national and international issues.
